About our services

Moree Plains Shire Council and Cleanaway are now working together to provide residents with their waste services. Council provides various waste services across the Moree Plains Shire including recycling, garden organics, garbage and bulky household goods collections.

Garbage

Collected weekly

Residents who have access to the garbage collection service are provided with a green body garbage bin with a red lid. Residents have the option of a 140L or 240L sized garbage bin. Any waste that is not hazardous can be placed in your garbage bin.

However, residents should endeavor to minimise the amount of waste put into the garbage bin by recycling whenever possible and depositing kitchen organic waste and garden organics in the Organics bin (green lid) if service is available.

Recycling

Collected fortnightly

For residents and businesses that have access to the recycling collection service, Moree Plains Shire Council provides a green body bin with a yellow lid. Residents have the option of a 240L or 360L sized recycling bin.

Moree Plains Shire Council encourages the recycling of empty steel cans, aerosol and aluminium cans, plastic bottles and containers, milk and juice cartons, glass bottles and jars, paper and cardboard.

It is vital for the recycling process that only the correct items go into the recycling bin. Incorrect items can cause many problems in processing and may result in recoverable resources going to landfill. It is essential that recyclable items ARE NOT placed in plastic bags. Plastic bags can do damage to the machines that sort the recyclables. Check the dedicated recycling pages of this site for further information.

Garden Organics

Collected fortnightly

For residents who have access to the organics collection, Moree Plains Shire Council provides a green body bin with a lime green lid for the collection of suitable garden and food waste. Residents should use this service as much as possible when disposing of their small tree prunings, flowers, weeds and grass clippings at home. Residents can also dispose of thin branches up to one metre long using this bin.

By using this service, residents are helping to divert a large amount of green waste away from landfill, thereby reducing carbon emissions and saving valuable land space. For more information on this service, see the dedicated organics pages of this site.

RECYCLING

Your bin with the yellow lid is for recycling. Once your recyclables from your bin are collected, they are sorted into product categories. From there, they are sent to manufacturers to be turned into brand new products.

Your recycling service saves valuable resources from being buried in landfill where they will never be used again. Your recyclables will be collected fortnightly.

When placing items in your recycling bin, please:

Do not place recyclable items in plastic bags
Flatten cardboard
Rinse all containers (use your washing up water when finished)
Remove lids from bottles and jars

Plastic bottles

Paper, cartons
and cardboard
Glass bottles and jars

Items which cannot be disposed of in your recycling bin include (but are not limited to):

ORGANICS-GARDEN AND FOOD WASTE

If organic waste goes to landfill it takes up valuable space and as it decomposes, harmful greenhouse gases (methane emissions) are produced. To reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfill, Moree Plains Council has access to a organics collection. This occurs once a fortnight using the organics bin.

Residents will be provided with a 240 litre bin with a green lid and a small kitchen caddy for food scraps. Residents should use this service as much as possible when disposing of their tree prunings, thin branches up to 1 metre long, flowers, weeds and grass clippings at home. Residents should also use this bin for disposing of their food scraps that they collect in their kitchen caddy.

The kitchen caddy is to be lined with the compostable bags provided and filled with kitchen waste including raw or cooked food, tea bags, coffee grounds, fruit, vegetables, peelings, leftovers, paper towels, meat and fish. Further compostable bags can be obtained free of charge by contacting the Waste Hotline. Please don’t use plastic bags as an alternative, even if they are labelled ‘bio-degradable’ as they will not break down with our composing method.

Larger garden organics such as tree stumps and large branches can be taken to your local landfill for appropriate disposal. Remember to sort your load to ensure there is no contamination, which SAVES YOU money!

Did you know if you use this service effectively you will be able to increase the amount of organic material that is diverted from landfill, by reducing what you put into your waste bin. Your green waste is processed and turned into mulch or compost.

WASTE

Your bin with the red lid is for general household waste. Once waste from your bin is collected, it is buried in landfill where it will never be used again.

That is why it is important to minimise what you place in your red lid bin where possible. Waste from you bin is collected weekly.

When placing items in your waste bin please:

No paints or thinners
No gas bottles
No car batteries
No syringes

Nappies
Small broken items
(e.g. ceramics and crockery)
Plastic bags, film and wrappers

Items which cannot be disposed of in your recycling bin include (but are not limited to):

Hazardous or chemical substances
Building materials
Car batteries and parts
Syringes and medical waste

BULKY HOUSEHOLD GOODS

Your property will receive two bulk household collection services per year on prescheduled dates. You can present 3 cubic metres at each collection (ie 3 metres x 1 metre x 1 metre).

Your bulk household collection dates are available in advance at www.mpsc.nsw.gov.au. You will also receive notification in the mail in the fortnight prior to collection in your area.

Residents must book this collection service in by phoning the Waste Hotline on 1300 736 719.

You must separate your materials into FOUR SEPARATE PILES so we may easily recycle as much of your waste as possible.

Safety First

Consider the hazard your kerbside waste could create from accidental poisoning, drowning, injuries and contamination

Box, tie, or contain all loose items (to stop wind-blown litter)
Wrap sharp edges (prevent cuts)
Take doors off whitegoods (due to possible entrapment)
Remove or cut cords off faulty equipment (choking and electrocution)
Hazardous or toxic material should be personally taken to the landfill (due to contamination)
Dispose of fluids appropriately (fluids can contaminate the environment or poison children/pets)
Place lids on containers and item that collect more than 30mm of water (prevent drowning)

Safe Sharps Disposal

Many people rely on using sharps such as needles and syringes to maintain their own health or that of a family member. These can be disposed of by taking them to the community sharps collection points.

Be Sharp Safe!

Place sharps in a sharps container or another appropriate* puncture resistant container (not glass).
Keep the container out of reach of children.
When the container is full, seal it then dispose in a community sharps bin.
Sharps must not be flushed down toilets or drains.
Sharps must not be disposed of in a public litter bin.
Sharps must not be left on the ground.
Sharps must not be placed into your household waste or recycling bin

Residential Waste and Recycling Collection

When is our recycling collected?

Your recycling bin will be picked up every fortnight on the same day as the garbage collection. Please refer to the address search above to check your next collection.

What colour is the recycling bin?

Your recycling bin has a green body with a yellow lid.

What can we put in our recycling bin?

You can place the following items in your recycling bin.

Paper and cardboard
Glass bottles and jars (lids removed)
Milk and juice cartons
Steel and Aluminum cans
Plastic bottles and containers

Can the glass bottles and jar lids be recycled?

Yes if it is made of hard plastic, steel or aluminium, it can be recycyled.

What can’t be recycled?

The following items cannot be recycled.

Plastic bags
Medical waste
Polystyrene foam
Nappies
Garden waste
Food scraps
Cloth
Chemicals and Oils

Why do items need to go into the recycling bin loose? Why can’t I use a plastic bag?

The machines that process your recycling can’t sort the items if they are in a plastic bag. There are also workers involved in the recycling process and if bags are filled with items other than your recycling, like food scraps, dirty items like nappies or dangerous items like toxic chemicals and syringes, it could put the worker at risk of danger and disease.

Can soft plastic/flexible plastics like cling wrap or pasta packets go into my recycling bin?

Unfortunately, soft plastic items are not able to be recycled.

Do I need to wash or rinse containers before I put them in the recycling bin?

No, you just need to empty any remaining scraps or leftover content.

However, due to the extreme temperatures in this area we strongly recommend a quick wash. Instead of wasting clean water why not use your left over washing-up water.

Why can I only recycle glass bottles and jars?

Other types of glass such as windows and drinking glasses are not compatible with the kerbside recycling system. They are made from different types of glass to bottles and jars.

Glass is recycled by melting it down, and generally these types of non-packaging glass are heat resistant and are harder to melt. Some drinking glasses also contain crystal which is also hard to melt.

Do I have to remove the plastic windows from envelopes?

No, you can recycle paper envelopes without removing the window.

Where do I place my recycling bin?

Place your recycle bin alongside your general bin on the kerbside – no later than 6am on the day of pickup. Ensure your bins are at least 50 cm apart.

What happens to the recycling after it is collected?

The recyclables are transported to the Moree Plains Cleanaway transfer station. It is then transferred to Challenge Community Services Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Narrabri where it is sorted and baled.

When do my bins get emptied?

Your general waste bin is emptied weekly, whilst your recycling and organics bins are emptied fortnightly on alternate weeks. Please enter your address in the Collection Calendar tab to check your next pickup date.

What should I do if my bin gets missed?

If your bin is missed please call Cleanaway (Waste provider) on 1300 736 719.

What should I do if my bin gets stolen or damaged?

I have just built a new house and need general and recycling household bins. How do I organise this?

What can’t we put in our general household bin?

The following items cannot be placed in your general household bin.

Lengths of steel and wood
Gas bottles
Garden hose and rope (unless cut into half metre lengths)
Engine oils/fluids
Lawn clippings (unless bagged)
Steel cable
Paints, chemicals and building materials
Car batteries
Flares/EPIRBS
Hot ashes
Engine parts
Explosives/Ammunitions
Syringes and medical wastes

Can I recycle Mobile Phones?

Mobile phones can be dropped off at Council branch offices or participating retail outlets for recycling.

Can I recycle Unwanted or Expired Medicines?

Unwanted or expired medicines can be returned to any pharmacy at any time.

Can I recycle Printer and Toner Cartridges?

You can take your old printer or toner cartridges to Council branch offices or participating retail outlets for recycling.

Can I leave loose bags of rubbish next to my bin?

Unfortunately, all rubbish must be placed inside the bin.

What do I do if I fill my bin and have more rubbish?

You must not over fill a bin. The maximum weight is 50kg and the lid should be closed. Additional waste can be taken to your local landfill or transfer station. An additional bin can be supplied – please contact your local council for more information on fees and charges.

Can I dispose of farm chemicals?

There is an Annual Rural and Household Chemical Clean up in July/August.
